Toxic Chemicals Frequently Found In Their Skin Care Products
The
Parabens - Methyl, Ethyl, Butyl, Propyl
The
primary reason for using these chemicals is to extend the shelf
life of the products and because they are cheaper than using
natural preservatives. Parabens are chemical preservatives.
They are readily absorbed into the skin and are believed to
be the source of various types of skin rashes and allergies.
Methyl
paraben combines benzoic acid with the methyl group of chemicals
and is highly toxic. It goes without saying that it should be
avoided at all costs.
Diazolidinyl
Urea and Imidazolidinyl Urea
These
are the most commonly used preservatives after the parabens.
They are well established as a primary cause of contact dermatitis
(American Academy of Dermatology). These ingredients are derived
from ANIMAL urine.
Synthetic
Colours
These
make a product look really nice but many of these synthetic
colorings are carcinogenic. These products should
be avoided at all costs. Look
for labels such as as D&C or FD&C. These will normally
be followed by a color and then a number (e.g. D&C Green
No. 4 or FD&C Red No. 2).
Sodium
Laureth Sulfate or Sodium Lauryl Ether Sulfate (SLES)
Found
in virtually all commercial hair shampoos, these ingredients
are nothing more than cheap, harsh detergents and surfactants,
that foam up particularly well. For those that care, the chemical
formula is CH3(CH2)10CH2(OCH2CH2)nOSO3Na. Sometimes the number
represented by "n" is specified in the name, for example
Laureth-2 Sulfate.
Synthetic
Fragrances
These
are made using chemicals and can have as many as 200 ingredients.
There is no way to know what the chemicals are, since on the
label it may simply read "fragrance." Some problems
caused by these chemicals include headaches, dizziness, rashes,
hyperpigmentation, violent coughing, vomiting and skin irritation.
There
are many other chemicals to be found in everyday personal care
products. Too many actually to go into them all here. In fact,
at least one study has shown that the averge woman unwittingly
applies 176 different chemicals to her body every day, as part
of her normal beauty /makeup routine!
The
time to start using chemical-free, truly all-natural products
on your skin is when you really are young and before you begin
to noticeably age.
However,
even if that ship has left the port, better late than never
- at least, that's if you care about your body and trying to
keep it as young-looking as nature will allow.
