NEWS FROM THE CRATER'S EDGE

WHAT'S HOT!!

HELLO ALL VOLCANIC EARTHLINGS!

Welcome to the August 2007 Edition of "News From The Crater's Edge".

The Edge

Volcanic Earth meets The Body Shop! Yes - right here in Port Vila. Our two Ni Vanuatu Retail Shop Managers, Nicole and Gloria, were selected to undergo an informative but fun 5-day Workshop with a number of the Body Shop's top Shop Managers. This Young Entreprenuers Business and Retail Workshop was held in Port Vila from the 13th to 17th August 2007.

UNDP in partnership with the Vanuatu Department of Youth and Training, The Body Shop (Australia) and CYP, have been running 2 such workshops a year in the Pacific region, for the last 6 years. This was the second such workshop of its kind in Vanuatu, the last one having taken place back in 2003.

The emphasis of the workshop was on customer service, merchandising, retailing and general business skills. The businesses that qualified to take part were those with a strong customer focus (generally defined as retail business). The training was open to big and small local Vanuatu

businesses. All participants had to be young Vanuatu citizens, working in a business or soon to start their own business. The purpose of the workshop was to help these young people to grow and make the business more competitive.

Volcanic Earth's own retail shop in The Adventure Centre in downtown Port Vila was used as a "model" business for practical work, with four or five participants and a Body Shop Manager visiting our store to reinforce the lessons particpants learnt over the course of the workshop.

Our vey special and heartfelt thanks go to Jeff Liew, a Pacific Regional Sustainable Livelihoods Specialist with the UNDP Pacific Centre in Suva; Paul Nalau and Agnes David of the Vanuatu Department of Youth and Training; and finally, the Body Shop (Australia).

Well done everybody and congratulations to Nicole, Gloria and all the other participants!

Recent Developments

Love is in the air! Linda and I finally got married after having lived together for the past ten years. Yes, that's Linda Trenkner, one of the two directors of Volcanic Earth and what better place is there to tie the knot than in beautiful Vanuatu. I don't want to bore you with wedding pics, but I couldn't resist including a few of them!

Linda's father, Flav, looks like he's enjoying himself island-style!

Our deepest gratitude to Andrew and Debbie Hogarth, Sarah Sands and her team at Events Vanuatu, the women dancers from Banks, Brian and his warriors, Judi Clelland of Cake Fantasy and to all who made the effort to attend and share our special day.

It's no wonder Events Vanuatu took out the Award for Best Presentation at this year's International Trade Show (Tok Tok Vanuatu 2007). Volcanic Earth is proud to be a supplier of gifts for Events Vanuatu weddings and special events. You're the best - congratulations!

The week after our own wedding, Linda and I attended a double Ni Vanuatu wedding at Tamanu. This was a great honour for us, as we were especially invited and were the only non Ni Vanuatu in attendance! It was huge, with loads of people from the islands of Melekula, Ambae and Ambrym.
